Davao del Norte to host DAVRAA 2014

TAGUM CITY, Jan 27 — All roads again lead to Davao del Norte as the province will be hosting once more the 2014 Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) on February 9-12, 2014.

Over 5,000 athletes, coaches and officials from six cities and four provinces in the Davao Region are expected to attend the four-day spectacle at the modern Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Barangay Mankilam, this city.

Vice Governor Victorio Suaybaguio and Acting provincial administrator Norma Lumain led the Executive Committee meeting on Monday to work out on the security, transportation, medical and other important details of the games.

Governor Rodolfo del Rosario earlier said the province will leave no stones unturned in ensuring the security of all the participants and visitors.

Davao del Norte’s spanking sports complex first hosted the DAVRAA in February last year.

The facility again saw action during the Mindanao Batang Pinoy Qualifying Games that followed on August 2013.

Davao del Norte won the right to once again host the 2014 DAVRAA during the DAVRAA Board meeting last September.

Del Rosario said the state-of-the-art sports facility was a major factor why the DAVRAA Board opted to bring the regional meet back to the province.

He noted the DAVRAA Board was impressed by the province's first hosting of the competitions.

Hostilities will yet again resume at the facility in the coming month of April this year with the holding of the National Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) championships.

The province hopes to up the ante as it is optimistic about the prospect of hosting the 2015 Palarong Pambansa.

Western Visayas, Calabarzon athletes look to challenge NCR dominance in Palarong Pambansa

The Department of Education and the Province of Laguna signed Monday afternoon the memorandum of agreement formalizing the conduct of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa from May 4 to 10. Earl Victor Rosero, GMA News

Around 15,000 to 17,000 of the country's top young athletes — some from the poorest and disaster-hit communities — are expected to display their Olympic potential at the 2014 Palarong Pambansa on May 4 to 10 this year in Laguna province, organizers said.
DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro and Laguna Governor Jeorge Ejercito said Monday afternoon that Bohol, Cebu, Samar, and Leyte will send delegates to the Palaro even though they are still reeling from the recent calamities that hit their areas.
Students from the Western Visayas and Calabarzon provinces (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) will continue to challenge to the long-standing dominance of the National Capital Region in the overall Palaro standings, according to DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali.
Western Visayas placed second in 2013 while Southern Tagalog Calabarzon ranked third in 2012.
Luistro said organizers will strive to continue the practice of awarding cash incentives, but quickly added they need the support of sponsors to sustain this effort.
“Ang dami pong napaka-gagandang nangyayari na puwedeng i-feature...and once media gives notice especially to the athletes and their life stories, I think our donors and private corporations will also begin to take notice,” the DepEd chief said.
In the 2013 Palaro, the cash incentive for each individual gold medalist was P3,000. For gold winners in teams of less than five members, the incentive is also P3,000, but for teams larger than five, each medalist gets P1,000. The cash prize was also P3,000 for record-breakers in individual and team sports. The incentives apply only to the regular sports events on the Palaro program.
Wushu, billiards and wrestling are among the new events in the 2014 Palaro, DepEd officials said.
Governor Ejercito said boxing champion Manny Pacquiao and basketball stars James Yap, Jeric Teng, and Jeron Teng will grace the opening ceremonies. “They will run one lap around the track oval before they light the fire that will signal the start of the Palaro,” the governor said.
Laguna budgeted P70 million for its hosting of the Palaro. He said this amount does not include the P1 billion the province has allocated for infrastructure spending to improve the Laguna sports complex and make repairs to classrooms which will serve as billeting for athletes.
Ejercito added Laguna's facilities include a sports village consisting of condominium type units for delegates
The province is hosting the Palaro for the first time. Ejercito said Laguna had vied to host twice before and succeeded this time around.

Salceda challenges Albay delegation to get Palarong Bicol 2014 championship

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan. 28 (PNA) — “Get the championship!”

This was the challenge hurled by Governor Joey Sarte Salceda to the 723-man Albay delegation to the Palarong Bicol 2014 to be held in Catanduanes on Feb. 2-7.

“I have short goals – to get better every day, to help Albay every day — but my only ultimate goal this February 2-7, 2014 is to win the championship in Palarong Bicol 2014,” Salceda stressed during the send-off ceremonies Tuesday morning at the Provincial Sports Center in Barangay Travesia, Guinobatan, Albay.

He stressed that it is all that matters.

“I dream about it. I dream about it all the time — how it would look, how it would feel. It would be so amazing,” the governor added.

Salceda said the sports team, which he called the 'Albay Vulcans," aims to maintain dominance in Palarong Bicol by bringing back the championships it held in 2011 and 2012.

The governor is expected to join the Vulcans during the opening ceremonies on Feb. 2.

The team, fresh from a 45-day rigorous training at the Provincial Sports Center in Travesia, Guinobatan town, are set to avenge their loss to Camarines Sur for the top honors in last year’s edition of the competitions.

Serious enough, Salceda approved the provincial government’s financial assistance of P1,000 for each athlete and official to boost the province’s campaign in the 17 sports disciplines where Albay has notable entries.

The Vulcans are favored to dominate the athletics and swimming events as well as in basketball and volleyball games in this tough week-long sports event.

Provincial Sports Coordinator Roderick Mendoza is confident Albay’s athletes and officials are well prepared to bring home the championships.

With the full support of the provincial government and the Department of Education Albay Division, Mendoza said, all team members are full of energy.

Dan Morillo, DepEd Albay sports coordinator, said the 723-member Albay delegation is complete and composed of 480 athletes, coaches and sports officials.

Of these participants, 11 athletes are with disabilities who will compete during Phil-Spada Regional Elimination as part of the Palarong Bicol 2014.

Morillo said the Albay sports delegation will compete in 17 events in elementary and secondary.

He said that of the 17 sports event, Albay is strong in athletics, arnis, baseball, volleyball, basketball, boxing, takraw , badminton, chess and lawn tennis where the province was the champion last year.

Albay used to be the leader in these sports for more than 20 years.

Morillo said the delegates underwent a strict screening and rigid training with the full support of the provincial government. (PNA)

DepEd-12 adopts new ‘brand name’ for athletic delegation

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Jan. 21 — The Department of Education (DepEd) in Region 12 has adopted a new “brand name” for the area’s athletic delegation starting with this year’s regional meet and the Palarong Pambansa.

Dr. Allan Farnazo, DepEd Region 12 director, said Tuesday they renamed the region’s athletic delegation to the Soccsksargen Regional Athletic Association (SRAA) from the previous Cotabato RAA (CRAA) in compliance with the provisions of Executive Order (EO) 36 issued in 2001 by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

EO 36 provided for the reorganization of the administrative regions of Mindanao, with Region 12 comprising the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and North Cotabato as well as the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato.

The official said Section 4 of EO 36 specifically provided for the renaming of the reconfigured region from then Central Mindanao and Cotabato to the Soccsksargen Region.

The Regional Development Council of Region 12 had declared Soccsksargen as the region’s official name, he said.

“This (SRAA) is our new brand name, our new identity and image,” he said in media forum in Koronadal City.

Farnazo said they decided to change regional athletic delegation’s name after concerned parties called the attention of DepEd Region 12 regarding the provisions of EO 36.

Before such information was presented to them, he admitted that the DepEd regional office is quite confused as to the identity of the region.

“The EO was signed way back in 2001 so we’re actually 13 years behind with this move. But we’re doing this to clear up the confusion on our identity once and for all,” he said.

With the adoption of Soccsksargen as the region’s official name, Farnazo said they are also providing legal education to pupils, students as well as local residents regarding the provisions of EO 36.

He noted that questions had been raised as to why the region’s official name only referred to the acronym for the area’s four provinces and two chartered cities — South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Cotabato City, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City.

The official explained that the area’s three other cities, specifically Tacurong, Kidapawan and Koronadal, were not included in the acronym since they are component cities of the provinces of Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato and South Cotabato, respectively.

Meantime, Farnazo said they’re hoping that the change in their athletic delegation’s name will help turn around the region’s performance in this year’s Palarong Pambansa.

The region only placed 11th among the country’s 17 regional athletic delegations that joined the 2013 Palarong Pambansa held in Dumaguete City.

“It is our ardent hope that the renaming of our region and the debut of this new image will eventually result to better performance and vibrant participation of our athletes,” he added.
