“We are still trying to negotiate with the DepEd so we can play as a new region,” ayon dito.

“The most difficult team to defeat is the National Capital Region. Well, they have more money for training but we carry the ball when it comes to athletics,” ang pahayag ni Marañon.

Albay to stage Palaro 2016 as a sports-tourism event

LEGAZPI CITY, May 1 (PNA) — Albay will host the 2016 Palarong Pambansa with a most welcome twist — a touristic adventure for participants and guests in the different venues of the week-long games, scattered around the most scenic places in the province.

Sports facilities for the Palaro are presently being constructed in various strategic sites of Albay’s three districts, all with a panoramic vista of the near perfect cone-shaped Mayon Volcano, which is now included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites tentative list. The facilities have an outlay of Php 850 million, Php 700 million of it from the national government approved by President Aquino early this year. Albay shells out the Php 150 million as counterpart.

The games’ main venue is the Albay Sports complex, in Guinobatan town, which will have an international standard oval track and a grandstand that could accommodate thousands of spectators.

Palaro 2016 also opens door to a titillating and mouth-watering culinary adventure for visitors. Albay’s cuisine now occupies a big role in the province’s tourism program, attracting huge crowds. They received overwhelming raves at the recent Madrid Fusion Manila, a global food fair held at the Mall of Asia.

Governor Joey Salceda said while the Palarong Pambansa is primarily a sports event under the Department of Education, it is also an opportunity for Albay—a leading tourism destination in the country—to showcase its hospitality and its global standard tourism sites to the sportsfest’s participants and guests.

Some 15,000 delegates from the country’s 17 regions are expected to join 21 Palaro events, apart from friends, families and visitors. “My guidance to Team Albay, the 2016 Palaro technical working group, is to design a “multi-venue” layout, that shall distribute participants in different sports sites around the province; so they can enjoy our global standard tourism areas while competing,” said Salceda. The 2016 Palaro is Albay’s second time to host the games in 63 years.

With sports tourism still toeing the strict standards of the games, Salceda said Albay plans to distribute the 21 events around the province so participants and visitors also get the opportunity to explore Albay’s best tourism destinations and specialties. Albay’s hosting the games along the line of sports tourism event may go down as first in the history of Palarong Pambansa.

Salceda is the first recipient of the Tourism Star Philippines Award given early this year by the Department of Tourism in recognition of his “exemplary contribution to the Philippine Tourism Industry.”

As the Philippines’ leading province in travel and tourism, Albay was featured at the March 10-13, 2015 Marche International Proffesionels d’Immobilier at the Palais de Festivals in Cannes, France and was featured in many national and international travel marketing sorties like the Berlin ITB 2012, London WTM 2013, Shanghai ITM 2013, and the Department of Tourism promotions in Hong Kong in 2014.

“We were able to secure the PNP’s order for a gun ban in the province from April 20 to May 10, 2015,” ayon sa gobernador sa ginanap na pagbubukas ng Palaro Tiangge at Tourism Village.

Limpag: Region 7 faces murderous Palaro sked

THE Palarong Pambansa will officially start on May 4--moved a day later to give way to the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight--but kids are already in the venue as early as two weeks before the start.

Doing what? The Department of Education only knows.

Some delegations who arrive early cram some practice time, some make do with tours. Some teams arrive a bit late, but still days before the opening, as they opt to practice at home rather than compete with other delegations for limited venues in the Palaro.

And in football, the quirk of the Palaro schedule has put Region 7 at a severe disadvantage. If you take a look at the groupings and the scheduling, you can even think that they somehow managed to fix both to make sure Central Visayas, or any of the two other heavy favorites, won’t make it to the knockout stage.

Central Visayas is in Group C with Northern Mindanao, ARMM and traditional powerhouse Western Visayas of John Carmona and Calabarzon, which is represented by San Beda, the newly-crowned NCAA champion.

And guess what? After playing ARMM on May 4 and NMRAA on May 5, Central Visayas, represented by Mandaue, will play its final two games against the top contenders Western Visayas and Calbarzon on the same day!

On the same day! Are they crazy?

First up is Western Visayas at 3:30 p.m. and if the match starts on time, they'd be lucky to get 90 minutes of rest before they take on Calabarzon at 6:30 p.m.

Nuts! Are the officials not aware how draining it is to play at 3:30 p.m. in the summer heat? They expect these kids to recover in just 90 minutes to play another full match against San Beda? A game which is expected to be physically taxing as both are contenders?

Are they risking the kids health? Jesus H. Christ! Like I've said, the teams are already there days before the scheduled--and useless---opening ceremony, why not schedule some of the games two days, or even a day before the opening program? That way, they won't have to cram two matches in a day.

That's not uncommon. Holding football matches before the opening is the standard practice of multi-event meets like the SEA Games, Asian Games and Olympics.

But sadly, taking for granted the health of the players, especially in football, is the standard practice in DepED meets too.

It’s already 2015, teams shouldn’t have to deal with murderous schedules like this. It’s 2015, perhaps it’s time for DepEd to take the players’ welfare in consideration?

Davao del Norte aims for top finish in Palaro

DAVAO DEL NORTE intends to put its best foot forward both as host and competitor but also looks further beyond the 2015 Palarong Pambansa by assuring the sustainability of its world-standard sports infrastructure.

“We—Davao del Norte – is part of Region 11—finished 11th two years ago and seventh last year in Laguna and as host this time around, we are eyeing to finish in the top three overall,” a jovial Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario said in his first appearance at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Tuesday at Shakey’s Malate.

Although Davao del Norte has already been receiving accolades as the “Best Palaro Ever” because of its remarkable pre-games preparations before the first event is staged on Sunday at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex (DDNSTC) in Tagum City, del Rosario told the forum presented by San Miguel Corp., Accel, Shakey’s and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. that they want to guarantee that the facilities won’t turn into white elephants.

A bill creating the Davao del Norte Sports Academy based at the DDNSTC, according to del Rosario who was accompanied in the forum by Palaro Organizing Committee Secretariat Chairperson Sofonias Gabonada Jr. and Department of Education Assistant Secretary, is already at the Senate for final approval.
“If we are ready to host Palaro, we would also like to be ready to make the province not only as top producer of banana but also as a breeding ground of future national and world champions,” he said.

The 2015 Palaro supported by the Tagum Agricultural Development Company Inc., Damosa Land, Davao Packaging Corp., Davao International Container Terminal, Inc. (DICT) and Pearl Farm Beach Resort will run through May 9 in the province known as the Banana Capital of the Philippines.

Umali, the DepEd’s secretary general for the Palarong Pambansa, gave his assurance about a successful hosting of the games in Davao del Norte.

“We have to look at Davao del Norte’s track record,” Umali said. “The province has hosted the regional [Davao Region] meet for the Palaro, the Batang Pinoy, a major Azkals game and the PRISAA [Private Schools Athletic Association. So we cannot ask for more.”

“What the three athletes have done proved that you need not die to be a hero,” ani Millan sa kanyang privilege speech.

“We’re proud of what they did. Not only athleticism, sports also teaches good manners, honesty and other virtues,” ani Jenielito Atillo, tagapagsalita ng DAVRAA.

“The torch is inspired by the tri-people diversity of Mindanao which the 2015 Palarong Pambansa has chosen to highlight,” ayon kay Davao del Norte Governor Rodrigo del Rosario.

“Peace can exist in this diverse composition of the island.”

“Our billeting quarters exemplified our theme in the literal sense when bordering elementary and high schools opened their fences to connect their campuses,” ani Del Rosario.

Region 6 athletes all fire-up for 2015 Palaro

ILOILO CITY, April 22 — Western Visayas athletes culled from the primary and secondary schools across the region are entering the final phase of their training this week and will depart for Tagum City in Davao del Norte three days before hostilities begin on May 3 for the annual 2015 Palarong Pambansa.

Department of Education(DepEd) Acting Region 6 director Gemma Ledesma said 481 student-athletes would compete in 32 events, and many of them were expected to make the cut and advance into the finals and fight for the coveted gold as well.

The Palarong Pambansa involves 36 demonstration sports, and 38 special games for special children, or the differently-abled.

Ledesma said 188 pupils from the elementary grades and 229 high schoolers would be off and running on May 3-9 who vie for honors along with over 9,000 athletes coming from all over the country.

The old rivalry between powerhouse National Capital Region (NCR) and Region 6 is anticipated to be rekindled, although a neck and neck battle for supremacy may also involve Region 4, Region 7, and Region 11.

This year's theme is "Breaking Borders, Building Peace". (PNA)

“The reaction of government is always the same be it 1 or 10 ang security threat. I expect nothing but I am prepared for everything,” pahayag ni Duterte.

“I am personally at ease that we will be able to provide unparalleled safety to everyone,” pahayag nito na aniya’y napakalaking kaluwagan para sa lalawigan. “With the backing of the whole Davao Region, there is no reason for us to fail.”

2 icons, a model to showcase talents in Palaro 2015

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte, April 13 – Two icons and model figure in a sport that has undergone an amazing rebirth in recent years have been tapped to provide inspiration to thousands of young athletes who will showcase their talent in the Palarong Pambansa.

Olympians Eric Buhain and Elma Muros Posadas—two of the most bemedalled athletes both on the local and global arena—and football star Yannick Tuason will be on hand to help mold the young athletes in the Palaro.

Davao del Norte is hosting the 2015 edition of the school-based games supported by the Tagum Agricultural Development Company Inc. (TADECO), Damosa Land, Davao Packaging Corporation (DPC), Davao International Container Terminal, Inc. (DICT) and Pearl Farm Beach Resort. Competitions will be held from May 3 to 9 at the Davao del Norte Sports Complex in Tagum City.

“They are three of the most inspiring faces in Philippine sports and the Palarong Pambansa is the best platform where their iconic status would boost the dedication and skills of the student athletes in the Palarong Pambansa,” Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario said.

Buhain is an extremely accomplished swimmer, having named Best Athlete of the 1991 Manila Southeast Asian Games and went on to become a former chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission. He has remained as an athlete and has embraced the now popular endurance sport of triathlon.

Who would not recognize Muros Posadas, the former long jump queen and hurdles champion also of the Sea Games and like Buhain, a former Athlete of the Year awardee? Muros Posadas has not left the sport she loves most and remains an accomplished track and field coach.

Tuason, on the other hand, was and is always an Azkal, the monicker of the members of the national men’s football team. Tuason was on that Azkals team that amazingly revived the Filipinos love for football in the 2010 AFC Suzuki Cup.

And what do they have in common? Buhain, Muros Posadas and Tuason all kicked off their sports careers in the Palarong Pambansa.

“I can never forget my Palarong Pambansa experience. It was in the Palaro where I got to compete in a big stage, with athletes who were as strong or stronger than I was,” said Buhain, who got into swimming at an early age to combat asthma. “It was a different feeling competing in the Palaro and it was very inspiring.”

Muros Posadas had her taste of Palaro in as much the same way as Buhain. “It’s in the Palaro where I learned to strive harder and always do my best during training and competition,” Muros Posadas said.
Tuason belongs to a well-off family but could not discount the lessons in life he earned from his Palaro experience.

“The Palaro is and will always be a level playing field. And it is in the Palaro where you compete with the best and the brightest, no matter where you come from,” Tuason said.

Buhain, Muros, Tuason to grace Palaro in Tagum

Two icons of Philippine sports and a model figure in a sport that has undergone an amazing rebirth in recent years have been tapped to provide inspiration to thousands of young athletes who will showcase their talent in the biggest single multi-sport competition in the country—the Palarong Pambansa.

Palaro preparation goes full swing

PREPARATIONS for the 2015 Palarong Pambansa in Tagum City, Davao del Norte are now in full swing, the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Tuesday.

Included in these preparations are the trainings of student-athletes conducted by their respective coaches and the Physical Education and School Sports unit from various DepEd regional offices.

The country’s biggest sporting event for public and private elementary and high school students is scheduled May 3 to 9 with more than 10,000 young athletes from all over the country participating.

More than the selection of this year’s provincial host and the composition of the 2015 Palarong Pambansa committees, honing student athletes’ skills are the most essential and vital part of Palarong Pambansa, since its results are reflective of the growth of the country’s sports development program.

DepEd said students who display exemplary skills in the Physical Education curriculum through the school intramurals are chosen by their school heads to compete in the district athletic meets where champions are delegated to the division athletic meets. The cream of the crop are then brought to the regional athletic meets where the National Screening and Accreditation Committee will evaluate, verify and accredit eligible athletes for the Palarong Pambansa at least two months before the much-awaited national event.

DepEd Assistant Secretary for Legal and Administrative Affairs Tonisito Umali said that present rules state that athletes to be presented to the screening and accreditation committee are chosen by both their coaches and DepEd officials.

Besides these athletic meets, the Sports Track curriculum included in DepEd’s K-to-12 basic education program is another tool in preparing student-athletes for Palaro as well as their academic development should they wish to pursue a career in the athletic industry.

School year 2016 to 2017 marks the full implementation of senior high school (Grades 11 and 12) nationwide, where the said Sports Track curriculum offers subjects like fundamentals in coaching, fitness testing and basic exercise programming.

Palaro get high marks from DepEd

TAGUM CITY – The cauldron for the 2015 Palarong Pambansa will be lit in 37 days yet but host Davao del Norte has reaped flying A marks from no less than the Department of Education (DepEd).

DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro has declared Davao del Norte looks bound to set a benchmark for all future editions of the annual Palaro.

“We were not harassed for this Palarong Pambansa 2015. Way ahead of schedule, there’s been no rushing on the part of the hosts,” Luistro said in Thursday’s official launch of the May 3 to 9 Palaro at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan of the Davao del Norte provincial capitol.

“We are looking at this year as the standard or benchmark for succeeding Palaro,” added Luistro, who was accompanied in the launch by top DepEd officials, including Palarong Pambansa secretary general Undersecratary Tony Umali.

Also officially launched in the well-attended ceremony were the DavNor Palaro website (www.davnorpalaro2015.com), the games official music video and a first-ever comprehensive 64-page guidebook that provides even the minutest details about the games – from specifics on billeting venues, transportation, medical assistance, communications, tourism, security, among others.

The DavNor Palaro 2015 guidebook—which could stand heads and shoulders even with Olympic and Asian Games guidebooks—will be the bible for this summer’s games.

“It is the privilege of our province to host the Palarong Pambansa 2015, an opportunity that we finally grasped after years of thorough planning and persistence,” Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario said in his message in the launch. “This is our time to prove that we have the capacity to host a prestigious national event worthy of being called ‘The Best Palaro Ever.’”
